And so we headed west again to pick up the Wild Atlantic Way where we
started a week before, this time heading south. At Foynes we found the
quirky Flying Boat Museum. For a short time in the 1930's this little harbour was the
European capital for commercial air travel as sea planes managed to fly
to New York via Canada from here. Weather was often bad and planes had
to turn back if the pilots didn't think they would make it. The Irish
Coffee was invented here when a plane returned late at night and the
barman at the terminal decided the shaken, cold passengers needed a shot
of whiskey in their coffee, served in a wine glass with cream on top
just to look fancy. We stayed in Tralee and Dingle which had grown a
great deal since our last visit over 15 years ago. Dick Mack's, the bar
where we had such a party was still there, with a lot more tourists and a
more laid back vibe. We spent the last 2 nights in Kenmare and Kinsale
before making our way to Cork for the Jazz Festival with Rina and Menon.
It's always a great music weekend but like most great events, it's
growing popularity makes it overcrowded which means it looses a bit of
it's charm. Like a day boat trip to PiPi Island, which has now lost all
it's appeal. Now how's that for a comparison!
