Another awesome drive from Sesriem to Swakopmund. We set up at Tiger Reef campsite and headed straight to the beach bar for sunset.
Monday 16 January
One of my favourite things to do in Namibia is the beach drive from the Walvis salt works out to the lighthouse at Pelican Point. Just tens of kilometres of sand driving and beautiful Ocean.Don't think you can get away with not bothering to deflate your tyres though. There were hundred and hundreds of seals along the beach and sadly a lot of dead pups. We saw quite a few jackal roaming the beach. Seal pups are easy prey I guess. The lighthouse is a very upmarket boutique hotel. Last year they had snooty signs up saying residents only. This year the place is closed up and delapidated. Perhaps they shouldn't have been so exclusive after all.
Tuesday 17 January
In the morning we headed out into the desert in search of Welwichias. It was an incredibly hot day out in the sun. These ancient plants are well adapted to the extreme climate and each plant lives for hundreds of years. This specific plant is 1500 years old. In the afternoon we headed north out of Swakopmund to meet Johan and Ronel who were fishing.
Ronel and I decided to go swimming. This being the Atlantic Ocean I was expecting bone-chilling cold water but somehow it was not. It was as warm as the KZN South Coast.
Wednesday 18 January
It's not too far too Spitzkoppe so we arrived before noon. We chose the same campsite as last year and were set up in time for lunch among the boulders. This is not a place you expect rain but rain it did. Menon and Rina were able to cook under their vehicle canopy and we all squeezed around a table under our awning for dinner.
